My child said he/she does not have homework. Is this true?

No. Your child has homework every day. On Fridays the homework will usually be a book report but it may be Science, Math or Social Studies. Please check the website or your child's yellow assignment sheets that will be sent home every single Monday. There will be 2 assignment sheets; 1 for Reading/Language Arts & 1 for Math/Science/Social Studies. On the one for Math/Science/Social Studies your child will be writing down most of his/her assignments. The assignment will be on the board & your child will be copying it onto his/her sheet. The Reading/Language Arts sheet will list all homework assignments from Monday to Friday as well as the Reading Vocab. words and Spelling words. Homework is to be completed daily & handed in the next day. Homework should not be completed ahead of time because the lesson will not have been taught yet. Homework provides consistent reinforcement & practice for concepts/skills taught & learned that day. In addition, students are also required to spend time reading & studying daily.

My child said that he/she cannot bring home textbooks. Is this true?

Your child can bring home any textbooks at any time. The only books, he/she cannot bring home are the Reading Mastery 3 Storybook & Workbook. The Reading Mastery 3 books are part of Disney's Direct Instruction program that supplements Harcourt- they are not the Harcourt Journey books that students can take home. Students are also allowed to bring home notebooks so they can review/study notes taken in class or so they can use these notes to assist them in doing their homework.

No. Students may leave books, supplies, etc., any materials in the desks. Students should not leave valuables or food in their desks; valuables should not be brought to school because if they are lost, damaged or stolen, the school is not responsible for their replacement.

My child left a worksheet at school that he/she has to complete for homework tonight. Can the teacher fax that worksheet to me?

No, the teachers do not have a personal fax machine to fax worksheets to parents. Most Reading/Language Arts worksheets can be obtained through Think Central which is a website that provides access to our Harcourt Reading series to parents/students.  The Math text and the Science text are also on Think Central. There is information about Think Central & how to log in on our classroom website.  I have also provided separate links to the Journeys Reading text, the Journeys Notebook (Workbook), the Math text, and the Science text, on our classroom website under "Important Links." There isn't a website for our Social Studies texts. Also students will receive worksheets for homework that may not be posted on the classroom website or Think Central; it is extremely important that students keep up with ALL of their handouts/assignments. If your child has lost a particular assignment, please let me know ASAP. Parents also muct check CPS Gradebook-Parent Portal to stay abreast of grades, missing assignments, etc. Students must be responsible for their homework and make sure they keep up with their assignments and any notes they receive in school & are required to bring home.

My child usually rides the bus home but I plan to pick him/her up this afternoon, do I need to notify the office and/or teacher?

YES! If your child normally rides the bus and you plan to pick your child up instead, you must send a note to school with your child that morning notifying the teacher or drop a note off in the office to inform them of your change. This is extremely important, because without a note, teachers are required to put that child on the bus. Students cannot just come to school & tell the teacher that someone is picking them up when they normally ride a bus. There must be written authorization from the parent.
